Functional Polymeric Composite Materials

Research Interests

My research interests are the areas of thermoplastic/thermoset polymer nanocomposites, electroactive actuators and sensors, polymer/metal/ inorganic nanoparticle synthesis and their composites, self-assembly structuring, biodegradable nanocomposites, micropackaging polymers/fabrication. Polymeric composites has been mostly applied for load-bearing structures used in such industrial sectors as aerospace, automobile, construction, military, display/electronics, sporting goods, etc. as a replacement of metals due to their light-weight and excellent physical/chemical properties including chemical resistance, toughness, processibility, etc. Recently, the industrial needs for the polymeric composites expand toward more functionalized structural applications, where the mechanical properties are integrated with specific functionalities including electrical conductivity, electromagnetic shielding interference (EMI) shielding, catalytic capability, gas/ liquid barrier characteristics, sound/vibration absorption characteristics, etc.

Those functionalities stem from such industrial sectors as display (OLED/LED/LCD), energy (fuel cell/supercapacitor/ rechargeable battery), automobile (NVH/body/bushing/engine mount), military (drone/radar/personal armament), environment (biodegradable/ sustainable/carbon-zero), aerospace (space shuttle/commercial airplane), electronics(3-D NAND/packaging/printed electronics), etc. Educating students for competent engineers, the research topics of my laboratory are usually motivated by the industrial sponsors and instinctive perspectives, which make this laboratory quite unique and consistent.
